WORKERS on the payroll of the Oyo State Government have decried the non-payment of their February and March 2015 salaries, with April also ending today. These workers, who spoke under condition of anonymity, highlighted their struggle to fend for their families for the past
Newly elected factional chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Waheed Olojede, confirming this, said that it was unfortunate that the union’s efforts to beckon on government to pay the outstanding salaries had not yielded positive result so far.
He affirmed that the government of the state had not paid workers; February and March salaries, while the month of April is about to end.
Olojede, however, noted that the government reportedly had commenced payment of February salaries of officers on GL01-06, in some ministries.
“But, if government has not paid beyond level 6, it means government has not paid February salaries. We look forward to a positive response from government in the light of tomorrow’s May Day celebration,” he added.
In a swift response, the state government, through the Special Adviser on Media, Dr Festus Adedayo, has expressed government’s commitment to the payment of workers’ salary.
While attributing the development to the acute decline in federal allocation suffered by many states in the country, he noted that government will complete the payment of the outstanding February salary next week.
“We have paid some part of February salary and we hope to complete it in the week ahead. The Oyo State Government is committed to payment of workers’ salary and ensuring their welfare. However, it is already public knowledge that there is acute decline in federal allocation which has been a major problem in states of the country. Oyo State is not immune to this problem.”
“In January for instance, while our wage bill was about N5.3billion, federal allocation was about N2.3billion,” he said.
He, therefore, called for understanding of workers, noting that government was committed to the welfare of workers
