Super Falcons forward, Asisat Oshoala, believes a
three-pronged attack likened to the style played by
Real Madrid in the Spanish La Liga will help Nigeria to
victory at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in
Canada.
Oshoala, Desire Oparanozie, Ngozi Okobi and Francisca
Ordega are the top choice strikers for coach Edwin
Okon at the tournament, but so far, they have only
accounted for three goals in two games.
The African champions face USA in their last group
game in the early hours of Wednesday, and only a win
will assure them of progress to the round of 16 after a
draw and a loss against Sweden and Australia
respectively.
“I want us to play like Real Madrid’s forwards. They’re
very, very good, Benzema, Ronaldo and Gareth Bale,”
Oshoala told FIFA.com after Nigeria’s 2-0 loss to
Australia last week.
“We can be similar to them and I’d like us to play just
like them as much as possible. As a front three we can
be very dangerous and if we try to be like them, we’ll
go very far in this tournament.”
The CAF player of the year, who is featuring in her first
senior Women’s World Cup, was disappointed Nigeria
lost to Australia but admitted she had learned valuable
lessons from the tournament.
The Liverpool forward had returned to Canada as one
of the players to note after winning both the adidas
Golden Ball and the Golden Boot at the FIFA U-20
Women’s World Cup last year.
“I have learned a lot of things about myself as a player.
This is a big tournament with much stronger
competition. When you play at the under-age
tournament, and then you come to the senior World
Cup, you see it’s much harder. So, you just have to
adapt to it,” she said.
“My style of play can’t always be the same. I need to
find different ways to change my attacking patterns so I
can get behind the backline.
“Australia I think were an easier opponent (than
Sweden). We were unlucky not to get the goals we
needed. But it doesn’t matter; we have to be better
(against USA), no matter what.”
